Local authorities

Becta provides advice and guidance to local authorities to support and encourage schools to improve learning with ICT. We do this by providing information and tools for whole school improvement and best value procurement.

Harnessing Technology Strategy

Harnessing Technology: Next Generation Learning 2008-14 was launched to senior leaders in education and skills at the ICT for Education conference in Birmingham following an extensive consultation with education and skills professionals.

The strategy sets out an ambitious agenda to make the following strategic impacts on the education system:

  • Improved personalised learning experiences
  • Confident system leadership and innovation
  • Technology confident effective providers
  • Engaged and empowered learners
  • Enabling infrastructure and processes.

This is a partnership strategy and Becta is working with a range of national and local partners through a National Strategic Group and sector-specific implementation boards that ensure activities are developed and delivered.

The role of local authorities

The strategy document says that a national strategy ‘means very little unless it supports needs at a local level. Local authorities are a natural and important ally for us in the strategy’s further development within a local context.’

Over the next year, Becta will work with local authorities to ensure that technology can be better used to support local Children’s Plans and achieve positive outcomes for all learners.
